St. George's Church

Project: Conservation/Restoration and Conversion to Offices of St. Georges Church

Architect: James A O'Connor & Associates (Conservation/Restoration) & Joseph Doyle Architects (New Works & Internal Conversions)

The church of St. Georges was designed by Francis Johnson, the architect of the G.P.O. in O’Connell Street and the Chapel Royal in Dublin.

Restoration of the church was carried out on a phased basis:

Phase 1.
The towers original cast iron had rusted and expanded, which caused the stone to spill and fall off. The cast iron had to be cut out and replaced with stainless steel bands. In addition to the structural works, the stone was repaired, cleaned and repainted.

Phase 2
Conservation works consisted of the repair and restoration of the external stonework to the main church structure, together with the redecoration and glazing of windows and decoration of external doors.

Phase 3 and 4
The third and final phases were undertaken together. Phase 3 consisted of the repair and restoration of the interior and the erection of two free standing floors in the main body of the church. Phase 4 consisted of the full conservation repair and restoration of the wrought and cast iron and external paving.
