Project: Ulsterbank
Architect: Consarc Design Group Ltd.
Nos 2-4 O’Connell Street Lower was built by Ulster Bank in 1923 to the designs of architect James Hanna. Much of the street had been destroyed during the 1916 Rising. It was significantly modified in c1976. The facades were unified at ground floor level and the large central window was replaced with concrete box framed windows at mezzanine level.
The building is Ulster Bank’s premier retail facility in the city centre and it was anxious to upgrade the facility, make it more welcoming to its customers and return the facade to its former glory. In addition, the bank wanted to provide a universally accessible entrance for its customers.
