Royal Avenue is defined by four storey high buildings on both sides, and characterised by heavily modelled cornice lines, above which rise a variety of roof profiles containing a further storey.
Resolution of the brief created a requirement for six levels of shopping and offices facing the avenue. In order to prevent the mass becoming overbearing, the highest levels of the scheme were stepped back in several planes, so that the perceived continuous street height is preseerved for the pedestrian viewpoint.
The design incorporates glass curtain walling with a stainless steel grillage proud of the glass envelope. This includes a number of maintenance walkways while also supporting the glazed canopy at first floor level. The grillage adds a layer of detail on the facade to complement the Victorian detail of the street. The reflective quality of the glass adds sparkle and drama to the street scene, particularly at night when shop displays and signage illuminate the surrounding area.
