The Civic Park and Tourist Information Office has its genesis in urban design strategy which sought to orientate Limerick to the River Shannon. The realisation of the project involved extending a surface carpark (formerly Arthur's Quay) into the Shannon. The extended portion forms a promenade with buffer planting, which links to an urban riverside walk.
The park also contains an amphitheatre, in addition to grassed copses to the park edges. The children's playground, an arbour and a bandstand/performance area will be added in the near future. The Tourist Information Office forms a gateway to the park. Its form refers to the site's history as a harbour.
