This is a mid-Victorian double fronted terraced house in London's Cannonbury conservation area. The clients were looking to adapt the house to give a more flexible usable space. Identified goals were:

(i) to open up the house to the garden
(ii) to bring the view and the natural light into the deep plan
(iii) to enliven the static, traditional plan by adding interconnecting spaces, giving moer possiblities of use and prospect.

The lower ground kitchen and family rooms were replanned and a double-height conservatory created leading into the garden which is also overseen at higher level from the living room. A new open steel staircase was placed within a curved glass bay. The service elements are placed within a central zone with major rooms served to either side.

The floors and stair treads are made of solid maple as are the custom-designed island kitchen units, which cater for differnent working heights. The green and gold slate complements the maple and protects the floor in wet areas.
