The building is designed to house visitor facilities and act as a base for those who wish to circumnavigate the Skellig Rocks off the south-west coast of Kerry, the site of a remarkable early Christian monastic settlement.

The rugged nature of the landscape and buildings is reflected in the construction of the centre which is formed of stone walls, exposed concrete walls, floors and ceilings, with the exterior of the vaulted roofs covered in wild grasses.

The site is being allowed revert to its natural condition. Bus and car parking are concealed at high level on the site behind large grassed banks.
