Theloosely connected group of buildings which form this museum are themselves part of this echibition. Each building retains its original character and detail; new elements are obviously modern and are integrated into the existing forms with a clarity of differentiation which is the essence of the design approach. The inclusion of "public" art at the entrance to the centre and in the new courtyard, adds another layer of quality and interest to this distinguished design.

Architects' Comments
The architcectural approach to this project was to develop a balanced relationship between an ensemble of distinctive historic buildings and contemporary work, while providing the diverse range of accomodation rquired in a specific circulation sequence.

The buildings are grouped around a new courtyard which provides public access through the site and binds new and old into a coherent entity.
