Mercy Hospital, Phase 1 Extension

Rather than resorting to pastiche reproduction, the new riverfront extension to the Mercy Hospital is a clear expression of modern architecture. Its clinical white walls, vaulted roofs and dramatic glazed bridge are set at right angles and in contrast to the 18th century elegance of Davis Ducaris's Mansion House (1767). The double height high level bridge links the new wing with the "old Mercy" and reinforces Ducarts classical essay by separating it from the rest of Henry Street.
Architects' Comments
The new Mercy Hospital Extension in Cork brings new life and purpose to a beautifully situated city block. This modern and complex building engages the scale of its more elderly surrounding neighbours.
Clients' Comments
This project required the architects to adhere to a highly complex brief, building programme, and tight cost constraints. Patient care has been the foremost point in the design. A high level of integration with the existing hospital has been achieved.
