The number of art deco buildings extant in Ireland is comparatively small in European terms. It is important that those still existing have a purpose beyond their original use. This landmark Kodak building has been given such a purpose by the skillful remodelling of the topmost floors to bring light into the deep plan and to provide stylish modern offices. The new roof shapes, terraces and windows sit comfortably in this fine building.
Architects' Description
The most significant intervention was the insertion of a new mezzanine, running the full length of the first floor. The old rooflights were replaced, and the central area was reroofed with a new clear-span curved steel structure, thus providing an extra office floor with space beneath for service rooms. The mezzanine floor also creates a relationship between the office interior and the external roof terrace.
