Mayo Education Centre

Dublin (over £100,000)

A project which uses an attractive plan form, followed through by fine detailing and the use of simple materials well chosen.

Clients Comments
The Mayo Educational Committee are delighted with the way the building has met the requirements of the brief, providing a strong urban design integrated into the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology campus and facilitating public permeability. As clients, we got a high quality, highly functional building which is a joy for workers and visitors alike.

Architects Comments
The architectural concept is largely in response to the site restrictions, and the north-east façade responds to the neighbouring 1860’s Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology building. The brief is organised around a central entrance space from which are located the offices, seminar and resource rooms. The scale is increased by pushing the ceiling up to allow natural light from the clerestory windows to enter and provide a unifying canopy above the central area and informal meeting area. The project is detailed and designed to provide a calm environment for learning, using a carefully chosen palate of materials, Its external juxtaposition with the surroundings develops a potency for urban development.
