Schuh Facade Refurbishment

Dublin (over £100,000)

A lesson in how to place a contemporary facade design on an important and historic street.

Architects Comments
The project involved the complete removal of the existing elevation and part demolition of internal structures, to facilitate a new shop fit-out and re-design of the O’Connell Street Façade.  The new elevation essentially reads as two plots re-defined in limestone and sandstone cladding, with curtain wall sections and pressed metal panels as unifying elements. The raised window above widens the shop’s profile within the whole street and challenges the perception of the 'shop-front' only existing at street level.

In reconciling the aims of a commercial client within the historical context of O’Connell Street, the scale, proportion and rhythm of the immediate and wider street-scape, become the design generators of a new contemporary façade composed within the constraints of an existing concrete frame. The result is a considered response to both client and site.

The brief to Oppermann Architecture for the redevelopment of 47/48 O’Connell Street was to create a contemporary façade and shop-front. As retailers we were anxious to have a shop-front with impact and as much glazing as possible. Aware of the restrictions imposed by Dublin Corporation Planning Department, and the site’s inclusion in the O’Connell Street Integrated Area Plan, we feel that Oppermann not only met and exceeded our needs but also satisfied all the requirements of the relevant statutory bodies.

We also required major internal restructuring with a view to establishing extra retail and storage space while at the same time creating exciting interior spaces to link with the interior designers brief. Again we were extremely please with the results and feel that the architects constantly met with our expectations from start to completion of the project.
