The Royal Hospital Kilmainham

This was the first great classical building in Ireland and the first by a single architect. Built by James Butler, the Great Duke of Ormonde, on the model of Les Invalides as a home for retired soldiers, it is a large quadrangular building with limestone arcades at ground level in the courtyard. Limestones details at doorcases, string courses and entablature, together with simple stucco window surrounds give interest to the rough plastered walls.
